Sun Smart

Some people like to get tans from the sun. If you’re not careful enough you can get life threatening disease from it too.

The sun can cause all sorts of things like melanomas or skin cancer.  In the future you might have to get melanomas cut out of your skin and the cancer can get into your blood stream and can spread it and also kill you. The operation to get the melanomas and the cancer out of you is not always nice and cannot always get it out of your system.

Sun screen screens the sun from your body in and out of water only if its water proof.

To protect your head from the sun you can wear a sun hat and it will stop your head from getting burnt and your hair won’t get sun bleached.

Everybody on earth should be sun smart so keep yourself safe when you’re in the sun.

Be Sun Smart

Be as safe as you can in the sun because you don’t want to get skin cancer also known as melanoma.

If you wear sunscreen you won’t get sunburnt or melanoma. Sunscreen is a thick protective layer from the sun. If you wear sunscreen regularly you won’t get sunburnt and make sure you put water proof sunscreen on when you’re swimming.

If you stay in the shade more than the sun you won’t get sun stroke. Sun stroke is when you get sick and vomit. If you drink lots of water you won’t get dehydrated. Remember the sun can’t give you shade it can only make you overheat.

If you wear a hat in the sun that covers your ears and neck you won’t get sunburnt. If you have clothes that can cover your legs and arms I would recommend wearing them because you need to cover as much as you can of your body so that your skin won’t get sunburnt.

So now you know about skin cancer/ Melanomas you will hopefully be sun smart.

Market Day

On Saturday 16th November the leadership group had a community/family fun day

because we wanted to raise money for the garden area.

We sold things like kindling, baking, toffee apples plus more, and we even had a sausage

sizzle and a  thrift shop.

It was good because we made a lot of money and got good comments about us

Working.

We all had fun,(the waterslide was fun as).

We learnt how to get the right change and about selling people items.

We had fun throwing sponges at people at the face splash.

Be smarter than the sun

We need to protect our wonderful skin from life threatening diseases caused by the sun.

If you don’t protect your skin you might get skin cancer or malenoma, making you very sick and sometimes ending in death.

To protect ourselves from getting burnt use sun screen at least twice a day if it is sunny.

Too much time in the sun can be very harmful. Too much time can get yourself sun burnt. You can get sun stroke too, it is very harmful.

Make sure you are smart around the sun.

Market Day

On Saturday the 16th we had had our Family/community market fun day at Glenham School.  In term 1 the leadership group decided to have a Market day at the end of the year to raise money to upgrade our Garden area.

There were six stalls selling different stuff.  Some of the activities were a Bouncy Castle, waterslide and Face Splash.  There were lots of food such as, Sausages, American Hot Dogs and baking and lots of drinks.

It took about a month and a half to organize the day.  It turned out great despite the weather.

A big thank you to everyone who helped out, without your support the day wouldn’t of happened.

We really enjoyed the day because it was very successful.

Leadership Day

Leadership day!

On Tuesday 17th of September the year five & six’s had their leadership day.  We were building compost bins.

In the morning we were either digging holes, prying wood apart with the crowbar or cleaning the worm farm.  All the girls apart from Gabrielle and I were cleaning the worm farm.  Hayden, Ashton and Ezekiel were digging the holes.  Ted, Stirling and Bond were using the crowbar.  Gabrielle and I were pulling out nails.  Mr Avery was helping us build the compost bins.

After morning tea we were setting up putting the pellets where they were going to go and we started nailing everything together.  All of us put the compost bins together.  It was about one o’clock when we were finished. They look awesome.

Football Tournament

On the 18th of September the senior class went to a football tournament at West Gore school.

We had two teams, the Glenham Rockets and the Glenham Strikers. The Glenham Rockets won 2 and lost 2 and the Glenham Strikers won 3 and lost 1. We played four games of 20 minutes each.

Both teams foot tripped people a lot (it was fun!) We used the soccer skills we have learnt all term and the competition was tough.

At the end we had to have our picture taken. The hardest team was Te tipua, they had year 7&8,s in it.

I think we all did well.

Visit to Observatory

Visit to the Observatory

On the 18th of September some of Room Nui and some of Room Iti went to the Observatory in Invercargill to look at some planets.

When we got there we had to wait for a while for the man to get there so he could let us into it. When we got into the observatory the man told us about some of the planets that we could see tonight. He told us it was too cloudy so we would have to wait for a while for it to clear up.

While we were waiting we took a look outside, we all started to panic “there are people in the gardens AHHH!” shouted some people, while some others shouted “show your faces and I’ve got a gun so beware.”  In the end it was our shadows on the trees.

Right back to the story, we ended up seeing Venus and the moon. I saw mountains on the moon and some craters.

By the time we got home it was almost 9:00 and I was so sleepy.

Description: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\MEDIA\CAGCAT10\j0215086.wmfOverall I had a great time and I loved seeing the moon and Venus.

Skiing

School started, morning tea, lunch, so long, why can't it be 3.30?

After school, OK 40 minutes to go.  Yes it's 3.30, off we go up the road to Wanaka for our annual skiing trip with the school.  I'm in a vehicle with Abby, Gabby, Andy and Jeff.

It was a long trip to Wanaka but we eventually got there.  We stayed at the Wanaka Lakeview Holiday Park.

Tea was all ready because Karen had gone up earlier to cook tea, it was yummy.  I liked the lasagne best.

We had gone to the cabins and got to choose who we were going to room with.  I roomed with Gabrielle.

The next morning we got up at 6.00, had breakfast then we left for the Cardrona ski field.  When we got there it was snowing.

We got our ski boots and skis and were all ready to head out.  We were with our instructor on the chair lift.  When we got to the top and started skiing.  It was freezing cold but we were strong.  When we finished out lesson we all went inside to warm-up.  Half an hour later we went back outside to ski.

It was lunch and we had to stop because it was like a blizzard.  It was a long travel home and we were the only car who stopped for fish and chips.

We finally got home.  It was so much fun and I hope we go skiing at Menzies.

Ski Time

The time has come, the bell just rang. Ye ha! In half an hours time we are off to Wanaka Lakeview Holiday Park.

Wahoo we are off to Wanaka.  When we got to Wanaka we got our stuff and claimed our rooms.  I was rooming with Ashton, Zekey and Jimmy.  We went back to the living room, tea smelled tasty.  We played a game that I did not understand then I heard "tea time", I was first to the bench.  For dinner I had lasagne, bacon and egg pie and sausages.  When I had finished tea we had to get our day pack.  I forgot to bring a day pack.  I had to bring my big bag.

Oh, the time has come.  We go to bed.  For some reason I could not go to sleep that night.

Yes, its morning, I'm hungry, breakfast time.  For breakfast I had cornflakes and toast.  After that we packed up our stuff and headed to the mountain.  We got up the mountain and claimed our space.  We went and fitted our gear and we headed for the tough blizardy snow.

For a start we had our lesson.  It was tough because the magic carpet was not working ,so we went up the chair lift.  That was hard because I can not ski very well.

At lunch time it was getting bad so we left.  When we got to Lumsden the fish and chip shop was closed so we had Mac'ers and it was yummy.  Then we went back to school to unpack our stuff and left to go home.  I can't wait until next year.

Ski Trip

On Thursday the 4th I was waiting anxiously for 2:00 to go to Wanaka for Glenham school ski trip.

2:00 came and Mum and I set off to Wanaka to start cooking tea at the lodge at Lake View Holiday Park.

After 3 long hours of driving we were at the lodge and went to the reception to get the keys for the rooms. So the tea was cooking and mum was watching the news so I decided to check out the rooms. There were 4,4 bed rooms and 9,2 bed rooms.

2 hours later everybody arrived and they were starving. Tea got dished up and it was so yummy, more like scrumscious especially the lasagne. After that we played a few games and then we went to bed.

At 5:10 in the morning we got up and got ready to go skiing. Although the weather is very windy and could be cancelled, but it’s not thank goodness. So we all set off to Cardrona ski field and got all our gear and boots and went to our lesson.

First we put our skis on and learnt to ski and then we went to the magic carpet. Now it's lunch time. After Lunch Grace , Guy and I went to the chair lift and the conditions were terrible, so anyway I was helping Grace up then ahhhhhhhh I fell down some of the mountain and found Ashton and Stirling, then the wind blue me down. Then I found Peter and skied down with him. So then by 1-2 o'clock we were on our way home but not me, I got to stay till Saturday at my friends YEAH.

I really enjoyed skiing and hope it will be better conditions next year.

Skiing

On Thursday the bell went and I was ready to go skiing.  I got in the Dodd's car and we followed Mrs Schreurs to her house to park her car.  She got in Mrs Dodd's car.  We drove to the big fish in Gore where all the others were waiting.

Ted and I played a card game all the way to Wanaka.  When we got to the Wanaka Lakeview Holiday Park at 7.30pm we got our heavy bags out of the cars and walked into the main room with the smell of tea waffling into the room.  Mrs Norman and Ahna came up early with all the food so when we got to Wanaka our tea was hot and ready to eat.  I had a sausage and my Mum's lasagne and bread.

In my room there was Ted and Bond.  We had a game in the main room with all the other children.  Then we made our yum lunch then went to our beds.

7.10am we were in the cars driving up the mountain.  I put on my blue pedal bike helmet in case we go over a cliff on the road.

When we got our ski gear we were ready for our lesson.  It started at 9.30am and finished early at 11am because it was so cold.  Mr Smith said I had sheep dogs on the back of my head because bits of my hair were frozen.

After morning tea we went out onto the main field.  I skied off the ski lift and down the first hill. I skied past the first flag, then the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th then hit a bump and fell over and slid down the hill.  I looked at one of my skis, the back of my click on the ski was bent.  Ted stopped to help me but he went backwards and fell over.  When Ted walked back up the hill to help me a snow boarder went over my skis and hit Ted's skis and face planted into the snow.  Finally a ski instructor stopped to help out.  He bent my ski back into place.  After I got my painful ski on we skied back for lunch.  The wind was so powerful it felt like 100 kilometres per hour.  Lots of people hated it but I loved it, snow flying everywhere going 100 kilometres per hour, YEAH!

We went back to the main skiing building.  Mrs Schreurs said that we had to give our skis and poles back because we were not allowed back out because of the weather.  Next we ate our lunch.  After our yummy lunch we went back down the hill.  I went with Ted to Frankton and then went home with my Dad, Mrs Stirling, Grace and Courtney.  I loved skiing this year and can't wait to go skiing next year.

Skiing

Skiing

At 3:30 we were off to Wanaka Lake View Holiday Park. Mrs Norman went at 1;20 so she could cook tea for us.

We got there at 7:30, unpacked the cars, found a room, [I roomed with Rhylee] and then we went and enjoyed savaloys, lasange and sausage rolls, delicious. Bed time, that means brush your teeth, say good night and jump in to bed.

6:00 wake up, so tired, yes today’s the big day it’s skiing! Quick get dressed, and go to the kitchen to get breakfast, mmmm Bacon, Eggs, Corn Flakes and Weet- Bix. In the cars and off to the ski field.

Finally we are at the bottom of the mountain, so scary but amazing at the same time. We are half way up the mountain so we are getting excited even more than we were. YES, we’re at the top of the mountain!

Jackets on, scarves on, gloves on, glasses on, helmets on and wet weather pants on. Next we went to the room where you get our skis from. We got our skis and poles and went to the sign that had levels 1 to 4 and you went and stood in front of what level you thought you were at. I was at level 3.

Level 3 kids went up the chair lift with an instructor. Wow it is steep, here we go. Ahhhhhhh I’m going to fall over, I turn sideways but I’m still going to crash. I’m over, on the ground. I am back on my feet so I ski down the mountain.

When we got down the mountain I went down a level, so I went on the magic carpet with Mrs Stirling. After I had been on the magic carpet about 5 times I went down to see the learners that were on the learners slope. But when Abby went down and ‘crash’ she fell over and sprained her ankle. So we went inside and had some slices, sandwiches and some bacon egg pie.

Out we go again, but Abby and I don’t know where our skis are. Dad and Mrs Stirling found them. “Magic carpet here we come.” Wow it’s really windy, I nearly got blown over on the escalator because the escalator kept stopping and starting.

At lunch time we had some lunch, but we weren’t allowed to go skiing again because it was so snowy. Back to the room we go and hand in our skis and poles. Jackets off, scarves off, helmets off, gloves off, glasses off and wet weather pants off.

We are in the cars and off down the mountain. We stopped for a toilet break and we played on the play ground and we had fish and chips too. We got home about 4:45.

I’m glad we went skiing because it snowed and it was lots of fun!

My First Time Skiing

On Thursday we went to Wanaka Lakeview Holiday Park to stay the night.  We skied at the Cardrona Ski Field and it was fun too.

The magic carpet took us up and it was fun going down but it took about 2 minutes and then we went up again and it took about 1 minute this time because it didn't stop.

I had the best day ever.

Ski Trip

Dad, me and the rest of room Nui were packed and ready to go to Cadrona Ski Field (every year we go). Finally, Thursday at 3:30. Dad, Gabby, Andy, Rhylee and I were in a car together.

We got to Wanaka Lakeview Holiday Park and all that I could smell was dinner. (Karen Norman and Ahna went early to get dinner ready.) Mmmm… lasagne, bacon and egg pie, weenies and bread. Dad and I were rooming together. I went to bed at 9:00 and Dad went to bed at 10:00. AAAAAAHHHHH… Dad slapped my hand. It was 6:00 am in the morning…I got dressed, had breakfast, brushed my hair and brushed my teeth and I put my bags in the car. We drove up the mountain. (It took about half an hour.)

We went and hired our ski boots, skis and poles. (Only some people had poles.) Next we had a lesson, and then we went on the magic carpet, then morning tea. After that we went on the other magic carpet. Soon after that we had lunch and left.

I love skiing because it’s fun and because Dad bought us lollies!!

By Abby

We even practiced how to get up when we fall over, it's not easy.

Skiing

On Thursday it was time to head to Wanaka.

In my car there was mum and Hayden and I.

We followed Mrs Schreurs to her house and she parked her car and Mrs Schreurs came in our car to Wanaka. First we stopped at Gore to assemble. Away we go to Wanaka, Hayden and I played car travel search game.

Before we know it were at Alex. Then we got to Wanaka Lake View Holiday Park. We sorted our rooms and in my room there was Hayden, Bond and I. So we started to play a game with Andy. Finally it was time to have tea, it was yum. We made our lunch for the next day and went to bed.

Beep, beep 6 o clock, we ate breakfast and in the cars and up the mountain. We got all our skis and boots and the essentials!!!  It was really windy with lots of snow, it was like the Antarctica up the mountain and lessons begun. It was hard to see. So we called it a day at lunch time, so we went home really early. It sucked that we had to go home early. It was a slow trip down the mountain because it was snowing. Away home we go, next thing we were at Frankton, and before we know it we are at Mrs Schreurs house, and then fish and chips and bed.

I love skiing because you can go about 80km going down the hill and I can’t wait till next year when I go skiing.

Ski Trip

On Thursday after school the seniors headed to Wanaka for skiing. We stayed in Wanaka at a lodge. Dad and I stayed in a room together.  For tea I had lasagne, saveloys and bread.

Mr Saunt played a game and we sat in a circle and had some tongs, you could say crossed, open and closed .I found out it had nothing to do with the tongs, because you had to do it with your feet so if you said open you would have your feet open.

I had very cosy p j’s, I woke up at one o’clock, then I woke up at the right time. When dad got off the top bunk he crashed into the coat hangers.

For breakfast I had eggs and spaghetti. Then we got into the cars and when we got to the bottom of the road to the mountain. Bond and his mum came into my car.

When we got up there we got our skis and ski boats, mine were perfect. When we got out I was on the learners slope it was really fun but I couldn’t get up. When I went on the big mountain I didn’t really enjoy it. Then we went home and had an ice cream .

Ski Camp

On Thursday after school we went on ski camp at Wanaka. My Dad took Dave, Stirling, Zek and I in our … Mazda 6!!!

We had just left and I had pulled my tooth out.

We finally got there. We sorted our room’s out and I stayed with Stirling, Zek, Jimmy. I got a double bed . We went to bed at 8.00 and couldn’t get to sleep till 12.00.

We woke up and got ready, and left . When we got there we went straight to hire, we got our stuff and we were out of there and on the ski field in time for our lessons. We got our instructor, and we were off.

The ski field was freezing. She was always stopping. When the lesson was over my Dad , Bond , Stirling and I went up the mountain, the ski lifts kept stopping, it was annoying. Then we had to leave early because of the weather. So we left. When we were in Gore we got McDonalds, then we got home.

Skiing!

Bam! Bam! It’s Thursday afternoon, I’m ready for the trip of my life. “We’re going Skiing,” I yell as we hopped in the car. Jessica came with me and my grandad. “Are we there yet” I kept yelling, it’s taking forever to get there. Yay! We’re in Wanaka but we’re lost. “Grandad there it is Wanaka Lakeview Holiday Park”.

We walked in to the smell of tea. Mrs Norman went early so that tea would be ready. Aaaaa… It’s time to go to bed, I slept with Courtney. “Wakey, Wakey” I say to Courtney, “we’re going skiing.”

Look there’s Cardrona Ski Field, look at all the snow. We got our gear straight away when we got there. I had a lesson first. We went on the big slope. It was fun. The snow kept hitting our face’s, it hurt, I felt like crying.

We left at one thirty. I was cold and wet. On the way home Jimmy, Jessica and Zeky came home with us. We went to my Uncle Bills house he has three dogs Toot, Coke and Ed. Ed was Zeky’s dog and Coke was Jimmy’s dog and Toot was my dog, Jessica didn’t have a dog. We went to Arrowtown, we saw the Chinese Village it was cool. Then we went to Queenstown and drove around, we saw boys in theirjockeys because they had been swimming. Jessica saw someone getting dressed without his curtains closed.

We stopped in Lumsden for tea I had a sandwich. Zeky and Jimmy were fighting over chips in their sleep. I sang really loud in the car and I scared everyone. I wish I could go next year but I’ll be at Menzies.

Glenham Community

We are learning about Communities this year. We had a great day out exploring the Glenham Community.
